Yarm 1914

Yarm1914 believe that Joseph was born in 1891 the 9th child of Mrs Elizabeth Handley and Mr William Handley married in 1872. His father was a stome mason and the family lived in Church Houses, Farndale, Kirkbymoorside. The family was completed with the birth of a younger brother Albert born in 1893.His father died on 21st January 1905. In 1911 Elizabeth was living in the house with three of her sons, Frederick a builder, Joseph and Albert both stone masons. Albert joined the 2nd Yorkshire Hussars (Alexandra, Princes of Wales' Own) in Loftus, pte 36073, and died on 5th January 1918.
Joseph married Anna Shaw in Pickering at the end of 1911 and joined the North Eastern railway. He and was posted in Yarm when he signed up for the NER pioneers. He died on 27th September 1918 and is commemorated at Moeuvres British Cemetery and on the plaque in the Methodist Church Yarm. It is likely that Anna registered his name for the plaque. Joseph and Albert are recorded on the war memorial outside St Mary's church in Farndale.
